2016 WDSF GrandSlam Standard Platja d'Aro Promo
Four GrandSlam legs have been danced in Standard this year, two went to the 2015 World and the 2016 European Champions, Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova, RUS, and two went to Simone Segatori and Annette Sudol, GER, who had held the same titles one year earlier. The Russians had extended their winning streak from November 2015 through June 2016, more than six months, until they had to succumb narrowly to the Germans in the Hong Kong leg. Maybe it was that loss that had Dmitry and Olga decide to stay away from the fourth leg of the 2016 Series in Stuttgart, GER, and to try to regroup in Russia. Despite their policy to “dance anywhere at any time” that they adhered to in the past. Now that we have Dmitry and Olga here with us in Platja d’Aro, their opponents, Simone and Annette, have chosen to take a short sabbatical after their last win in the Boston World Open at the beginning of the month. From what we hear, they have travelled to China to train dancers there. Something we can hardly blame them for, because teaching and training others is an important aspect of gaining one’s livelihood in top-level DanceSport: the prize money alone would definitely not be enough. At the same time we are also aware that “avoidance” is the name of the game frequently played ahead of a World Championship. Couples steering clear of one another during the weeks and even months leading up to the pinnacle championship is one way of building up drama – and it also helps to avoid that one couple could get cast as a runner-up too soon. The World Championship Standard in Aarhus, DEN, is exactly two weeks away In any case, virtually all the top Standard couples are present and ready to dance for the win in the last regular leg of the Series that was scheduled to take place in Moscow, RUS, on 29 October. But ill-guided Russian officials cancelled it. That all these couples, including the entire elite from Russia, have made it to Catalonia in northeastern Spain is an achievement in itself, as the relocation was decided on less than two weeks ago. 2018 WDSF GrandSlam Latin Rimini
The 2018 WDSF GrandSlam Latin Rimini in collaboration with SWAROVSKI came to a conclusion with a veritable fireworks of superb performances put in by the six finalist couples. Edgar Marcos and Alina Nowak, POL, were the novelty in the line-up for the last round. However, after finishing seventh or eighth in the most recent legs of the GrandSlam Series as well as in the World and European Championships, the two had it coming. Well done! Winners were Armen Tsaturyan and Svetlana Gudyno, RUS, making it three successive GrandSlam victories for the year and accrueing a record-high number of points while doing so. Congratulations! First and second runners up were, respectively, Marius-Andrei Balan - Khrystyna Moshenska, GER and Timur Imametdinov - Nina Bezzubova, GER. Amazing dancing too! 2018 WDSF GrandSlam Standard Rimini I ITV w. Glukhov & Glazunova
Nine years after a GrandSlam was held in Rimini, ITA, for the first and last time until 2018, the premier Series in DanceSport returned to the Adriatic resort town. This time with both disciplines and - as the Italians say - "allo grande." At an imposing venue, in the "Blue Arena" at the Rimini Fair, the 92 Standard couples outdid themselves in a setting that looked every bit as perfect as those seen on "Dancing with the Stars." The top two couples in the GrandSlam Ranking would be able to confirm that Rimini as a DanceSport destination has evolved much since 2009. That was the year they finished 14th (Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova) and 21st (Francesco Galuppo and Debora Pancini). But so have they! After an inspired final, Dmitry and Olga were able to celebrate their ninth GrandSlam victory in succession - in total they have 16 - and they are looking forward to dance in Stuttgart, GER, next for number ten. The first runners-up were Francesco and Debora, putting in another high-scoring performance after their last exploit in Taipei City. Second runners-up were Alexey Glukhov - Anastasia Glazunova, RUS, who made the third podium of their career. 2018 WDSF GrandSlam Standard Taipei City I Interview Madis & Aleksandra
It was an eventful and memorable night for all six couples dancing in the final of the 2018 GrandSlam Standard Taipei City. Obviously, it will be remembered by each and every one of them for something in particular. For Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova it was the quality of the floor at the Taipei Gymnasium that stood out. For Evaldas Sodeika and Ieva Zukauskaite, LTU, it was something that they preferred to keep to themselves during the post-event interview. But none of the couples will remember the first of July 2018 quite as vividly as Madis Abel and Aleksandra Galkina, EST, who danced in their first GrandSlam Final ever. Interview with Charles-Guillaume and Elena
The GrandSlam Latin Taipei City lived up to the expectations in terms of participation and quality of dancing. One short of 50 couples had entered and the six usual made it all the way to the final. The dancing in round five was therefore as perfect as anyone had come to expect from the best of the best. Armen Tsaturyan and Svetlana Gudyno, RUS, managed to get their first series of GrandSlam victories started, with the two victories back-to-back in Helsinki and in Taipei City. In fact, they are undefeated for the year and recently claimed the European title in Debrecen, HUN, with authority. Pre-Championship Interview with Silvestri - Varadi, HUN
This European Latin is the third competition after the dominators over the past three years, Moldovans Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus, decided to move on to the Professional Division, leaving their likely successors to slug it out between them. Going on ranks accrued over time and an ability to occasionally, very occasionally, defeat the Moldovans at their own game, one would have had to consider the Russian couple Armen Tsaturyan - Svertlana Gudyno as their heir apparent. The 2017 GrandSlam Final was the first head-to-head for first between the Russians and the second couple staking out a claim to be legitimate successors too: Marius-Andrei Balan and Khrystyna Moshenska, GER. Indeed, the Germans defeated the Russians narrowly in Shanghai, CHN, last December. But in March of this year, the fortunes turned at the GrandSlam in Helsinki, FIN. There, the margin separating the Russian winners from the German runners-up was less than one point. Let's see what will happen in Debrecen, HUN, in this third encounter since the 2017 World Latin in Vienna, AUT, where yet another couple was the public's favourite. Timur Imametdinov - Nina Bezzubova, GER, were certainly the most applauded of all, but this distinction should go to Andrea Silvestri - Martina Varadi, HUN. The 6-camera production in High Definition covers the decisive stages of the 2018 European Latin, with full graphics but without commentary. The programme is made up of four parts: the full-length semi-final, interviews with the semi-finalists, the full-length final and interviews with the medallists. Interview with Marius and Khrys
The GrandSlam Latin Series 2017 concluded with the “Showdown in Shanghai,” the invitational Final danced at the Luwan Stadium in early December. It was marked by a huge surprise: the absence of the Series’ dominators – Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus, MDA. The couple had won every single leg but decided not to contest the last title in play for 2017. Instead, they announced that they would continue their careers in the Professional Division. The GrandSlam Final ended up being a very closely fought battle between the couples considered to be the likely successors to Gabriele and Anna: Armen Tsaturyan - Svetlana Gudyno, RUS, and Marius-Andrei Balan - Khrystyna Moshenska, GER. It was a margin of only two decimal points that made the difference in the end between Marius-Andrei and Khrystyna in first and Armen and Svetlana in second. These two couples face off for the first time this year in the inaugural leg of the GrandSlam Series in Helsinki, FIN. Both come off wins at prestigious World Opens in January and February: the Germans won Pforzheim, GER, and the Russians Copenhagen, DEN, and Lisbon, POR. 2018 WDSF GrandSlam Latin Helsinki
Interview with Evaldas and Ieva
It is the privilege of the GrandSlam leg in Helsinki, FIN, to mark an important milestone: the start of another Series. Forgotten are all of last year's results: the supremacy of the two dancers who won everything there is to win as well as the couples that were rallying for positions behind them. Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova, RUS, will return to the floor after a season-opening win at the 2018 European in Copenhagen, DEN, two weeks ago. While it is unlikely that the powers have shifted much since then, this second major Standard competition of the year will be revealing in many respects. Couples we haven't seen dancing in Denmark will join us here, couples that haven't made the final then could make it now. Even though the shifts are bound to be of a subtle nature, there will be shifts. And on top of everything: what you will get to watch as a LIVE webcast and then as a video-on-demand highlight will be the best Standard dancing available anywhere on air or on-line.
