The Hollywood DanceSport Championships is unlike any other competition in America for one very special reason: It awards more money to winners than anywhere else in dancesport.

This week's competition wraps up what is known as the Millennium Cup Tour. Participants must compete in three competitions — the Superstars DanceSport Championships, Millennium DanceSport Championships, and, last but not least, the Hollywood DanceSport Championships in Los Angeles.

Competing in all three championships automatically places dancers in the running to win a piece of the extra $160,000 of award money available at HDSC on top of the $80,000 already set for the competition.

That’s almost a quarter of a million dollars in cash money being awarded. On top of that, some lucky dancer will walk away with a two-year lease for a brand new BMW.

“(In) most competitions, dancers are only winning $1,500, and after the expenses that go into attending the competition in the first place, they are barely breaking even,” HDSC event organizer Michael Chapman said.

While professional dancers can have a lucrative career teaching, what many outsiders don’t realize it takes a lot of money for these pros to stay at the top when they are competing. Chapman said. the Millennium Cup Tour is about recognizing that struggle and “really giving back to the dancers."
