The Vision Behind The HDSC

The 2017 Hollywood DanceSport Championship is fast approaching, and every year its organizers seem to find away to make the weeklong event bigger and better.

The HDSC, which returns to the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 5, is produced by the renowned team of DanceSport organizer Michael Chapman, "So You Think You Can Dance" judge Mary Murphy, and former American Smooth champion and "Dancing with the Stars" pro Jonathan Roberts.

While the event was originally founded by Murphy and Chapman, Roberts came on board five years ago to help bring the duo's dream of creating a glamorous, one-of-a-kind competition to life.

When asked what inspired Chapman and Murphy to create a event like this together, Chapman says, “Well we’ve been close friends for over 30 years, and we just have so much fun together. We shared the same vision of the type of event we wanted to created and how to grow it.”

Formerly known as the Pacific DanceSport Championship, the competition's name was changed when the organizers decided it needed something with more character and that better embodied the essence of the event.

“We changed the name of the event to create glamour and add a character base to the event,” Chapman said.

Since its inception nine years ago, the Hollywood DanceSport Championship has grown by leaps and bounds. Chapman recalls having only 1,200 entries when the competition first started.

“Last year we took it to 9,000 entries, and we are expecting even more this year,” he said.

But what separates Chapman and the HSBC's other organizers from the rest is their dedication to their vision.

“It’s not just about making a profit to us…" Chapman said. "We reinvest a lot of our profits right back into the event in order to grow it.”

That willingness to foster the competition's expansion allows the HSBC to go the extra mile, including by awarding eight times more prize money than a typical event of its size. Along with a beautiful ambiance and the best entertainment productions in the business, the Hollywood DanceSport Championship is dedicated to perfecting all the little details that really make a competitor's experience special.

“It’s a feel-good, high-energy competition..." Chapman said. "We (as organizers) try to spread that energy throughout the competition and try to make everyone feel how we feel.”
