'DWTS' Ep. 5 Recap: 'Most Memorable Year'

On Monday night's "Dancing with the Stars," the remaining contestants were asked to perform a dance in a style they had not yet learned and to create a piece based on a critical moment in their lives.

Known in past seasons as “Most Memorable Year" night, this year’s episode was full of passion, rife with tears, and tense with emotion.

While all of the couples had meaningful performances, that still didn’t save one unlucky duo from getting the boot. Keep reading to see which stars shined brightest and which couple stepped on the the dance floor for the last time.

Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold

JUDGES SCORE: 29 out of 30

Contemporary – “Take Me Home” by Us The Duo

Jordan and Lindsay’s dance was inspired by the day Jordan’s grandparents officially adopted him. As Jordan grew up, his biological mother battled with addiction and in his words “the addiction led her to be selfish and unfit to be a mother.” On Monday, Jordan and Lindsay danced a beautiful and technical contemporary piece that really highlighted both of their dancing chops. As Jordan ended the dance in tears, the judges awarded the couple for their impressive choreography and technical precision by giving them the highest score of the night.

Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy

JUDGES SCORE: 27/30

Foxtrot – “I Lived” by OneRepublic

Victoria is the contestant who has been through conceivably the most harrowing life event of anyone on the show. After she was completely debilitated from a neurological infection at the age of 11, it took Victoria 10 years to get back on her feet. Her story is an incredible one of triumph and perseverance, and her dance with Val reflected that beautifully.

Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas

JUDGES SCORE: 26/30

Viennese Waltz – “Anchor” by Mindy Gledhill

Lindsey’s most memorable moment came when she lost her father. As she told the story of their relationship and her father's eventual decline, you couldn’t help but fight back tears. The song choice and costuming so perfectly matched her story (Maks wore Linsey’s fathers' actual hat and scarf) that by the end of it you felt as if you knew both her and her father. Lindsey is still at neck and neck with Jordan for first place and rightfully so.

Vanessa Lachey and Maks Chmerkovskiy

JUDGES SCORE: 24/30

Rumba – “Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)” by Nick Lachey

Vanessa’s performance was inspired by her son, who was born prematurely at 29 weeks last December, and the trials and healing she and her husband and fellow competitor Nick Lachey have experienced together since then. The fact that she chose a song sung by her husband made the performance that much more effective and heartfelt.

The rest of the scores from Monday night's contestants are as follows:

Nikki Bella & Artem Chigvintsev – 24/30

Frankie Muniz & Witney Carson – 24/30

Terrell Owens & Cheryl Burke – 24/30

Sasha Pieterse & Gleb Savchenko – 24/30

Drew Scott & Emma Slater – 24/30

Derek Fisher & Sharna Burgess – 23/30

Nick Lachey & Peta Murgatroyd – 22/30

Nick and Derek had the lowest scores of the night, placing them both on the cutting board. But when it was all said in done Nick remained standing and Derek and Sharna bid farewell.
