Who Is Lex Ishimoto, And How Did He Become So Good?

Lex Ishimoto seemed like the quiet, modest type when we first saw him walk on the stage for his New York audition this past July to kick off the 14th season of "So You Think You Can Dance.”

However, by the end of his audition performance, he had left the judges speechless and the audience in a dazzled uproar. A star was born right then and there.

From that moment forward, Ishimoto was a fan favorite and remained so all the way to the end of the competition. On Sept. 25, Ishimoto became the 14th winner of “SYTYCD," earning not only the title of America’s favorite dancer but also $250,000 in the process. So who is this young man that America has fallen so helplessly in love with?

Ishimoto was born on March 10, 1998, in Irvine, California. He started dancing at the age of 7 after being inspired by watching his sister's dance classes. Ishimoto’s teachers reflected on his ability as young dancer, proclaiming that they "had rarely ever seen natural talent" like what he displayed.

Trained in jazz, lyrical, tap, hip-hop, ballet, and contemporary, Ishimoto is a truly well-rounded dancer and began excelling at his craft almost immediately. By the age of 12, Ishimoto had locked down an audition with the prestigious touring cast of "Billy Elliot." After five days of intense training in New York, Ishimoto was chosen as one of six boys to play Billy in the North American run of the show. Ishimoto performed the part 97 1/2 times before retiring and moving on to pursue other aspirations.

Before his appearance on "SYTYCD," Ishimoto already had a career that most dancers twice his age would have been proud of accomplishing. He was nominated for outstanding lead actor at the Helen Hayes Awards for his role in Billy Elliot, toured with almost every prestigious convention around -- including NUVO, 24 Seven, Jump, and Pulse -- won Teen Male Dancer of the Year at the 2014 Dance Awards, and was named Senior Grand Prix winner at the Los Angeles Youth America Grand Prix regionals.

Watching Ishimoto dance this past season was inspiring to say the least, but one of the aspects that made us fall in love with him most was watching his budding relationship play out with fellow "SYTYCD" contestant Taylor Sieve.

Despite what many viewers thought, Ishimoto and Sieve had met over a year before the show's start and had been dating for quite some time before the season commenced. The couple came out to the audience about their relationship with a beautifully choreographed routine by crowd favorite Mia Michaels.

By the show's end, Ishimoto had $250K in his pocket and the “SYTYCD” title on his resume, and there really is no ceiling on what he can accomplish in his future.

First up on his list was getting on "Ellen" and who would blame him? Check Ishimoto out as he challenges “Blackish” star Anthony Anderson to a break-dance battle in a recent appearance on the show.
