No one saw this loss coming — least of all La Verne.

After riding high all season, the No. 1 La Verne Leopards saw their undefeated season come to an end when unranked Redlands handed them a 3-2 loss Tuesday, Nov. 4.

La Verne climbed to the top of the Division III volleyball rankings by Week 4, their first time since 2002, and had stayed there since. The Leopards and East Texas Baptist had remained the only two undefeated ranked teams in the division.

The stumble came just three games away from the postseason and two weeks before the start of the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. The most recent rankings still list La Verne at No. 1, but East Texas Baptist is expected to take the top seed in the final regular-season poll.

For Redlands, this victory marks the Bulldogs’ first win over La Verne in 15 years. The Leopards took the first two sets (25-23, 25-17), but the Bulldogs rallied to take the next three (23-25, 23-25, 11-15).

La Verne still leads the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings, but the loss secured Redlands a spot in the postseason tournament for the first time since 2009.

Only time will tell how this upset will impact the NCAA Division III tournament brackets. Next week’s poll will offer more insight, but one thing is certain — this loss isn’t the end of the road for La Verne. With the postseason ahead, it could be just the beginning.
